Week 5

Information on emerging technologies

Nanotechnology:
According to the Wikipedia “Nano Technology is the manipulation of matter on an atomic and molecular scale”. In simple word, it is the advanced technology with modern features in the small form of scale. As we can see the First Generation computers were quite big like a room which used to use big vacuums with only one programme  but now everyone uses the smart phones which is far more advanced but in very small form. Scientists currently debate the future implications of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology may be able to create many new materials and devices with a vast range of applications, such as in medicine, electronics, biomaterials and energy production.

Grid computing:
Business dictionary defines grid computing as “Interconnected computer systems where the machines utilize the same resources collectively. Grid computing usually consists of one main computer that distributes information and tasks to a group of networked computers to accomplish a common goal. Grid computing is often used to complete complicated or tedious mathematical or scientific calculations”.

Wikipedia (2013) defines Grid computing as the federation of computer resources from multiple locations to reach a common goal. The grid can be thought of as a distributed system with non-interactive workloads that involve a large number of files. What distinguishes grid computing from conventional high performance computing systems such as cluster computing is that grids tend to be more loosely coupled, heterogeneous, and geographically dispersed. Although a single grid can be dedicated to a particular application, commonly a grid is used for a variety of purposes. Grids are often constructed with general-purpose grid middleware software libraries.

Quantum computing:
According to the Wikipedia a quantum computer is a computation device that makes direct use of quantum mechanical phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement, to perform operations on data. Quantum computers are different from digital computers based on transistors. Whereas digital computers require data to be encoded into binary digits (bits), quantum computation uses quantum properties to represent data and perform operations on these data. But Quantum computing is not well suited for tasks such as word processing and email, but it is ideal for tasks such as cryptography and modeling and indexing very large databases

Semantic web:
Business dictionary defines semantic web as an extension of the current World Wide Web that catalogs information on a webpage and reprocesses it so that other machines including computers can understand the information. The semantic web alleviates the tasks required by humans. The conversion of the data provides a common framework for multiple systems to understand and process the content. In the simple form we can say it as the platform which will provide us the way to share content beyond the limit of application and the websites. For example semantic web.org is the common platform for this community.

Explain why adaptability and interpersonal skills are important to an IT professional.
According to the Rusty Nail (2005), IT professional is a term that gets thrown around a lot, particularly when dealing with any part of the computer industry or jobs relating to it. Profession is a calling that requires specialized knowledge and long and intensive academic preparation. Any person who is used to about the hardware, software, and some programming is not an IT Professional. They are just an IT person who has some knowledge about the computers. Indeed IT professional is the people who have the capability of handling computers and its component in well mannered, ethical and professional way.

Adaptability is the capability of adjustment. Moreover it’s being able to adjust oneself in any different condition. IT both creates and eliminates jobs. As jobs are created or eliminated, labor markets adjust in complex ways. We might be able to work in the pressure of the different people. Sometimes might be we need to change our places due to placement or transfer. In the business world of today, change is the constant. Survival depends upon innovation, flexibility, and an adaptive mind-set. Thus we need to have the ability to adopt the situation as being an IT professional.
For example: Software piracy is the act of illegally making copies of software or enabling others to access software to which they are not entitled. The professional people won’t support and take participate on those act. Many industries have their own secret information, IT professional people helps to keep the information safe and confidential.
Interpersonal skills are the life skills we use every day to communicate and interact with other people, individually and in groups. Interpersonal skills include not only how we communicate with others, but also our confidence and our ability to listen and understand. Problem solving, decision making and personal stress management are also considered as our personal skills.
In context of IT professional studies have shown that their ability to work with people can make the difference between IT project failure and success. Communication is the vital factor for it professional. It is because IT is not all about to work with yourself but it more about the communication and interaction between client, profession and the people. With the interpersonal skill they have we can more work once step ahead compare another profession.
In conclusion we can that the IT profession have the great responsibility of the entire organization. They are the main people who have can put the entire organization on the peak of success and the bottom as the failure.

Week 8

IT future trends in education application domains. What is your view on the future trend described in no. 1?
World is dynamic so do we. Information technologies are more vibrant. In 1940 first generation computers was invented. It used vacuum tubes for circuitry and magnetic drums for memory, and was often enormous, taking up entire rooms. They were very expensive to operate and in addition to using a great deal of electricity, generated a lot of heat, which was often the cause of malfunctions. The vacuum was replaced by transistor which is called second generation computer era in 1956. But in 1964 transistor was replaced by the integrated circuit. It was the hallmark of the third generation of computers. Transistors were miniaturized and placed on silicon chips, called semiconductors, which drastically increased the speed and efficiency of computers. But in 1972 transistor have been replaced by the microprocessor with more advanced efficiency. Till date we are sing the fourth generation computers. The future generation computer is called 5th generation which will be more advanced than today’s one. Fifth generation computing devices, based on artificial intelligence, are still in development, though there are some applications, such as voice recognition, that are being used today. The use of parallel processing and superconductors is helping to make artificial intelligence a reality. Quantum computation and molecular and nanotechnology will radically change the face of computers in years to come. The goal of fifth-generation computing is to develop devices that respond to natural language input and are capable of learning and self-organization.

Few decades before, the source of the education was only school. Teachers used to give lessons in the classes and notes in the black board by white chalk. Time is so powerful which changes everything even the education system. These days teachers and the course books are not only the educational source of students. Thousands of sources are available through the help of Information Technology.  One click can show thousands option of educational sites in the internet. The question is what about in the future???

Harvard University has the scheme of distance learning. Student can study from any part of the world. It offer more than 200 Harvard online classes through video courses and live web- conference course. I think in the future, students can study from the home. They don’t have to go class and attend lecture.  Lecture might be taken through online portals, like video conference, audio and video which is called ubiquitous learning. We are living in the smart learning era. Smartphones and tabs are no longer used for phone calls, moreover it used for internet applications. Many smart phone and tabs have thousands of the online journals which can be accessed free. After few years it all smart phones will be taken as ubiquitous learning.

Why ubiquitous learning???

Firstly, it will shift the classroom from a traditional to non-traditional context. Students don’t have to go class, attend lecture moreover they can learn from house. Secondly, prepares and encourages students to become life-long learners. In ubiquitous e-learning data are more reachable. Thousands of journals and articles can be accessed easily which will make the students long life learners. Creates an environment in which interaction is “free of stress”. Researchers had found that some of the people fell little bit nervous to interact face to face, than online. While talking in online they feel free and talk normally than talk in portals. Thus it makes students feel free to express their thought. Prepares students to face for real life. New technologies have become a part of our lives, and students need to learn how to use these technologies in order to prepare for their future careers.

Explore traditional businesses that have moved to digital firm and how globalization has changed their way to do business?
Local perfume from Indonesia making a good market in Albukhary International University; one of the Malaysian University is the good example of globalization in traditional business. Either it is big trade which deals with millions dollars or small which only do 100 dollars, if it’s international then it is called globalization on business.
The Susi restaurant which started its business from Japan now sale’s its food in America, Canada, Malaysia, Singapore, and so on through venture. The Proton car from Malaysia is running on the road of India, Nepal, Ireland, and so on. The Ebay online shopping center is doing its business all around the world which started from California (USA) through only online. These are some examples which are really popular in the present context.
Now the question may be rise how is it possible???

Fig no 1: Online business center .
Fig no 2: online Business portal
Fig no3: Online shop

These are some example traditional business that went to digital firm and become successful currently. Some years before, if anyone wants to start his business he has to go through lots of problems. For example: To put on a fancy cloth shop. Firstly, s/he has to find a fine room near the road side where public can access the shop easily, recruit some staff, pay high amount of money to advertisement agency, and pay tax to the government. To set up a shop is really a clumsy and hectic stuff. But digital firm have totally change the situation.
Core business processes are accomplished through digital networks spanning the entire organization or linking multiple organizations. E-business: use of digital technology and the Internet to execute the major business processes in the enterprise. E-commerce: part of e-business that deals with the buying and selling of goods and services over the Internet
According to the eMarketer (2010) “Online consumer sales grew to an estimated $225billion in 2010, 12% increase over 2009. Approximately 80Million households have broadband access to the Internet, around 63M use social network, 43M do online banking, and 38M watch an online video”. We can see each year millions of people are accessing e-commerce business. Thus we can say that globalization has totally changed the normal business form to digital firm.

Types of e-Commerce:
      Business-to-consumer (B2C)
      Business-to-business (B2B)
      Consumer-to-consumer (C2C)
