Week 5

Information on emerging technologies

Nanotechnology:
According to the Wikipedia “Nano Technology is the manipulation of matter on an atomic and molecular scale”. In simple word, it is the advanced technology with modern features in the small form of scale. As we can see the First Generation computers were quite big like a room which used to use big vacuums with only one programme  but now everyone uses the smart phones which is far more advanced but in very small form. Scientists currently debate the future implications of nanotechnology. Nanotechnology may be able to create many new materials and devices with a vast range of applications, such as in medicine, electronics, biomaterials and energy production.

Grid computing:
Business dictionary defines grid computing as “Interconnected computer systems where the machines utilize the same resources collectively. Grid computing usually consists of one main computer that distributes information and tasks to a group of networked computers to accomplish a common goal. Grid computing is often used to complete complicated or tedious mathematical or scientific calculations”.

Wikipedia (2013) defines Grid computing as the federation of computer resources from multiple locations to reach a common goal. The grid can be thought of as a distributed system with non-interactive workloads that involve a large number of files. What distinguishes grid computing from conventional high performance computing systems such as cluster computing is that grids tend to be more loosely coupled, heterogeneous, and geographically dispersed. Although a single grid can be dedicated to a particular application, commonly a grid is used for a variety of purposes. Grids are often constructed with general-purpose grid middleware software libraries.

Quantum computing:
According to the Wikipedia a quantum computer is a computation device that makes direct use of quantum mechanical phenomena, such as superposition and entanglement, to perform operations on data. Quantum computers are different from digital computers based on transistors. Whereas digital computers require data to be encoded into binary digits (bits), quantum computation uses quantum properties to represent data and perform operations on these data. But Quantum computing is not well suited for tasks such as word processing and email, but it is ideal for tasks such as cryptography and modeling and indexing very large databases

Semantic web:
Business dictionary defines semantic web as an extension of the current World Wide Web that catalogs information on a webpage and reprocesses it so that other machines including computers can understand the information. The semantic web alleviates the tasks required by humans. The conversion of the data provides a common framework for multiple systems to understand and process the content. In the simple form we can say it as the platform which will provide us the way to share content beyond the limit of application and the websites. For example semantic web.org is the common platform for this community.
